My Deeksha Experience

On Oct. 15th, 2007 I went through a deeply profound spiritual experience. It was a milestone in my path of enlightenment. I attended a Deeksha event in NYC. Those of you already on the spiritual path may be familiar with Deeksha, but for those that have never heard I would like to introduce you to it after which I will describe my personal experience.

The Oneness Blessing (also known as Oneness Deeksha or Diksha) is a non-denominational benediction. A unique and specific blessing. It is the transfer of Divine Energy which, over time is designed to bring about the state of Oneness in the recipient. It initiates a neurobiological change in the brain that when complete enables the senses to be free from the interference of the mind. When the senses are unclouded by the mind’s interpretations, a natural clarity of perception occurs with accompanying spontaneous feelings of joy, inner calmness and connection to the Oneness in everything.

Oneness Blessing is transferred by the Oneness Facilitator by placing his or her hands onto the crown of your head, usually for about 1 minute. Experiences during the Oneness Blessing vary, sometimes strong, sometimes subtle, sometimes delayed until even days later. The recipient may experience a tingling sensation in the head, or blissful energy flowing through the body, or sometimes nothing at all.

The Oneness Blessing does not adhere to any religion, nor any particular belief nor spiritual path. The Oneness Blessing is given each day to people all over the world, people of all races, all religions, all spiritual beliefs or no spiritual beliefs, and to people of all nationalities. It is not necessary to change one’s religion, nor adopt a new guru or spiritual master to receive the Oneness Blessing – nor to offer the Oneness Blessing to others.

NOTE: Only certified facilitators can administer Deeksha. Usually, they have to complete a 21-day training in India.

***MY EXPERIENCE***

I first came across the concept of Deeksha through an article at WIE magazine. As I was reading I was immediately captivated and wanted to know more about it. On the web site above I came across local facilitator Michele Matteo who was holding Deeksha event in NYC on Oct. 15th at the One Spirit Learning Alliance Center near Times Square. I eagerly signed up and attended the event. By the way, Michele’s web site is http://www.onenessgroup.org/.

There were about 30 people there. The meeting started with a Chakra meditation to open and prepare our energy centers to receive the blessing. After the meditation, Michele and her husband and spiritual teacher Thom Matteo began a discussion on Fear. It was a quite a fascinating topic to talk about. The main thing about fear is that it’s nothing more than assumptions that the mind creates. All assumptions are lies and rob today from its beauty and opportunities. We live our fears as if they are real when actually, they are a false reality. By facing the fears we have we are able to understand what makes as afraid. We need to learn to let the fear pass though our body because by doing we can free ourselves from it and allow for new experiences to enter our lives. Life is too short to be lived in hiding from fear.

The Deeksha blessing followed next. As the lights went dim and spiritual music started playing in the background we were asked to close our eyes and relax. Five to six facilitators were there to help administer the Deeksha. At first, the anticipation of the unknown made me tense. I realized it was my mind interfering with its annoying noise. So I focused on my breath and soon after all thoughts vanished. I was empty and ready to let the energy enter my body.

At that moment, I felt someone placing two hands on the top of my head. Suddenly a fire ball started forming in my naval area where the Solar Plexus Chakra is located. My body turned into a furnace. The feeling was so strange, unfamiliar…my mind wanted to analyze it right away. But I didn’t want to let my mind take over the experience. I just wanted to let it be and simply observe it.

As the two hands lifted of my head, the warm feeling in my navel was gone too. How interesting, I thought. A few minutes later another set of hands was placed on my head and the exact same thing occurred. This time I fully embraced the warmth and enjoy its effect on my body. I knew that was the Divine Energy going through my Chakras and opening them one by one like the leaves of a lotus. Lotus is exactly what I felt like, turned to the light and enjoyed simply being. My sense of time, space and surroundings completely disappeared. They were replaced with sense of inner peace and joy.

The process was repeated a couple of more times after which we were asked to lay flat on the floor with our hands placed on the chest. Supposedly, by doing so it speeds up the entrance of Divine Energy into our being and it completes the blessing. That is when a new set of feelings took over my body. The first feeling was an immense concentration of energy in the back of my head. I didn’t feel anything in the rest of my body. As the feeling intensified it started moving in my head similarly to a grass blade moving side to side as the wind is caressing it gently in a romantic dance. I know it sounds bizarre but that’s the best way I can describe it.

Somehow I experienced an instinctual desire to leave my body. I call it instinctual because it felt surprisingly natural and familiar. I just wanted to merge with some incredibly seductive energy but I had no idea what it was. I don’t think I had an out of body experience as some people may have during deep meditation but I was fully aware of what was happening.

The next thing I experienced was an extremely powerful magnetic field in my chest area where the Heart Chakra is located. My hands lifted off about 2 inches from my chest and started playing with this new-found energy. If you have seen a child playing with a new toy you would be able to understand my fascination at that moment. It was incredibly beautiful!

At one point, Michele softly announced that the Deeksha blessing is complete and we can open our eyes slowly and lift up from the floor. I noticed that it took many of us some time to get back into reality, sort of speak. I can tell they experienced something just as powerful as me but in their own unique way. I wondered what they felt.

My friends, all I can say is that what happened to me yesterday will stay with me forever. Experiencing the Deeksha was one of the most joyous and beautiful things I’ve encountered in my life. There is something inside of us that is free of ego, fear, perceptions and distortion. It recognizes the Universal Truth and knows how to connect with the Source…may that be God or the Divine Consciousness. We need to find a way to clear the path of communication between us and that Source so that we will no longer suffer. The Deeksha blessing is said to open that pathway for communication.
